What can you do with a communication degree?

Those who have chosen to major in communication in college have a wide variety of options open to them post-graduation. This is one of the reasons that I, along with many others, chose this as my degree. It is incredibly versatile and can apply to many different career paths. Like I mentioned in my introduction post, after graduating high school I had no idea what I wanted to study or what career to pursue, so I chose communication hoping it would give me some freedom in that decision, and it did!

With that being said, I’ve done some research on some of the most popular jobs for communication majors post-grad, and Ill be going over what I found here.

One of the most common jobs for a communication major is working in the field of social media, whether as a manager for a company’s social media page or as a content creator.

The job of a social media manager involves several different roles, ranging from hands-on to more vision-based. This can include planning out a content strategy for the week, deciding what to post on a company’s social accounts, or tracking the success of digital campaigns.

Many communication majors choose to work in the field of public relations. The job of a PR specialist for an organization consists of communicating with the public to maintain a favorable brand image, writing press releases, and managing reputations following a crisis, to name a few.

Another popular job for communication majors is working in human resources, or HR. This job involves training new staff, establishing workplace rules and guidelines, and settling interpersonal conflicts.

Although this is one of the lesser-known roles of communication majors, some also choose to go into event planning. This includes working with both vendors and clients, doing market research on trends, and working with marketing and PR departments to promote the event. I was especially interested to find this fact, as I usually think of more digital roles for communication majors, but it makes sense.

In conclusion, the possibilities are nearly endless when it comes to what you can do with a communications degree. As a communication major, you bring a unique perspective to the workplace that will have a positive effect on any job you end up having. Whether you are interested in writing, design, marketing, or public relations, there is a job for you out there with this degree.
